The royal art of silk dyeing — by hand, in copper vessels, for the great silks of India.

Karnataka silk dyeing heritageA silk fit for a Maharaja

In 1785 Tipu Sultan sent for silkworms and began the silk of Mysore. The Wodeyar kings dressed their court in it, and Karnataka has led India’s mulberry silk ever since.

Our silk dyeing house belongs to that story. For generations our family has dyed silk the slow way — by hand, in copper, over a wood fire — for weavers and houses across India.

Traditional hand silk dyeingDyed by hand, in copper

Every hank is weighed, tied, dipped, turned, wrung and hung by hand. Our dye baths are heated in copper over open fire, as they always have been, for deep, even colour that lasts.

Recipes, timings and the feel of a perfect dip were never written in a manual — they were taught at the vat, from one generation of dyers to the next.

The six steps of the ritual

  1. SelectionRaw silk is graded by hand for lustre and evenness, then loosely tied so colour can reach every thread.
  2. DegummingA gentle soap bath lifts the natural gum and reveals the silk’s true softness.
  3. The copper bathThe dye bath is brought slowly to temperature in copper over a wood fire — never rushed.
  4. Turned by handHanks are lowered, lifted and turned on wooden rods, again and again, for colour true to the core.
  5. Washed & driedRinsed until the water runs clear, then dried in shade and breeze to protect the sheen.
  6. Shade approvalEach lot is matched against your master sample in daylight before it leaves us.

What is hand silk dyeing?

Hand silk dyeing is the traditional way of colouring silk: each hank of yarn or length of fabric is dipped, turned and lifted by hand in a dye bath, so the dyer controls the colour at every step. At SLN Dyeing Works the dye bath is heated in copper over a wood fire, for deep, even colour that lasts.
